TRIP PARTICLULARS:

Trip Highlights:

  • Steep and towering Chugach Mountains
  • Waterfalls and glaciers pouring from green peaks
  • Wildlife such as grizzlies, eagles, seals and salmon
  • Glaciers calving into the river

In such a glorious setting, opportunities will abound to learn from Nature and to understand better not only the wisdom of the Natural Order but also its relevance to Worsley Classical Five-Element AcupunctureTM.

Our guides will care for us well during the entire excursion, including all of our meal preparation while on the river. Participants should be prepared to assist with general camp duties such as setting up and breaking down tents, organizing personal gear, and supporting the guides with camp kitchen duties as needed. All participants should feel capable of getting in and out of rafts and walking on uneven ground.

The weather in South-Central Alaska in July is variable. Days will be long with over 18 hours between sunrise and sunset. Temperature will range from 45°-75° Fahrenheit with days either being sunny with blue skies, or cloudy and raining. You will be provided a gear list to guide your packing and preparation

Trip Itinerary:

July 1, 2023:

In the morning, the group will meet in Anchorage for a 90-minute flight east of Anchorage into the remote Wrangell St-Elias National Park. During the flight, there will be incredible views of the Chugach and Wrangell mountains.

We will have two nights in the historic Kennicot Inn and explore the small town of McCarthy which is nestled in the park. Our lodging will have the backdrop of the magnificent Mt. Blackburn which rises over 14,000 feet above the historic mine and the Root Glacier.

Our time in McCarthy will comprise a mixture of class meetings, tours of the historic mine, optional glacier walk, and free time.

July 3rd:

We will take a 2-hour van shuttle ride to the town of Chitina, AK, where the float on the river begins.

We will be greeted by St. Elias Mountain Guides who will guide us on our eight-day (July3rd – 10th ) scenic Copper River trip from Chitna to Cordo

During this journey, we will float approximately 85 miles from the dry interior of Alaska, cutting through the Chugach Mountains headed towards the ocean in Cordova. Each night will be spent at a riverside campsite selected by our guides. Many of these sites will only see a few groups camp on them each year, and it is likely we will not see many other parties floating the river while we are on it. This trip is a scenic float, not a whitewater adventure, allowing time to watch for wildlife and experience the grandeur of the remote wilderness.

St. Elias Alpine Guides provides Tent, Rubber Boots, and Dry Bags, and a gear list of what participants must bring will be provided.
